About

Summer McCall is a Northern Californian raised in the traditional Scottish music & dance scene of the Sierra Nevada foothills. As a booking agent, festival director, ceilidh dance caller, Celtic musician and more, Summer's effervescent and extroverted nature has led her down a global network of Celtic/Folk artists. As a Celtic cellist, fiddler, and dancer, she found her way to Boston MA for the traditional music scene in September 2019 to further her passions and musical upbringing. Her current endeavors consist of working as a booking agent through both FLi Artists and her own independent agency called McCall Booking, Festival Director of the Boston Celtic Music Festival (BCMFest), co-founder of Ministry of Folk (LLC), a regular session musician in Boston on fiddle, babysitter to folk-stars, and Scottish ceilidh dance calling.

With an enthusiastic and infectious love for movement, Summer has long-standing experience and joy calling traditional dances for Scottish ceilidhs (pronounced kālē). With a background of over 20 years of experience dancing ballet, modern, middle eastern, Irish/Scottish step dancing, and tap, calling for dances came naturally in her early teens. Starting as a caller at Alasdair Fraser's Sierra Fiddle Camp in 2012 she has since been asked to lead dances at various fiddle camps around the country, private events, the KVMR Celtic Festival, Boston Celtic Music Festival, and throughout Europe.

Summer is a co-founder of Ministry of Folk - a virtual music community platform developed in April 2020 amongst her teammates Sarah Collins, Brendan Hearn, and Kate Gregory (with early assistance from Bandcamp's Engineering Lead, Jackson Clawson). Ministry of Folk aims to unite and support some of the greatest musicians in the traditional Folk scene today with events, services, and means of collaboration.

From September 2020-July 2023, she worked for the legendary folk venue Club Passim in Cambridge, MA as their Marketing & Membership Manager, co-facilitator in the initiative of the DEIB program - The Folk Collective, and Festival Director of BCMFest. She has continued to work as an independent contractor with Passim as the Festival Director.

Summer studied Classical Cello Performance with a minor in Spanish at Cal Poly Humboldt in 2016. From 2011-2020 she had a private music studio with upmost of 30 individual students a week on cello, fiddle, or piano. She attended the Berklee College of Music 5-week Summer Program in 2010 for folk cello where she studied with professors such as John McGann and Mimi Rabson. She has attended dozens of fiddle camps since the age of 13, primarily those run by Alasdair Fraser. From these camps, she has studied and become close friends with her greatest musical mentors such as Natalie Haas, Hanneke Cassel, Alasdair Fraser, Laura Cortese, Mike Block, Tristan Clarridge and more. Now a days, she's hired to teach at music camps such as Sierra Fiddle Camp, Valley Of The Moon, Lark Camp, and Ashokan as either a cello, fiddle or dance instructor.
